The Banks of Sullane / Paiste Fionn

Written as recorded by Kathryn Cater, harp and Sandy Norman Flute in “Walking Tune”.

Ash Grove
A much loved tune, presented sweetly and simply. There are a few accidentals that are not too challenging for lever harp, and one easy key change with plenty of time (see example below).

Lever harp should play the G in measure 86 in the RH treble clef (not a harmonic) to give the LH more time for levers.

The Banks of Sullane / Paiste Fionn
These two pieces are arranged to be performed as a set, but stand alone just as well. To make Banks of Sullane end as a single piece, harp should change the last measure to a simple D major arpeggio, as shown below.
In A Dorian, (written with an F# in the key signature) Banks of Sullane slips back and forth between the F sharp and natural, so it is a challenge for lever harp.

Paiste Fionn, however, as a stand alone piece in D Major has no accidentals and is a delight; easy for lever harp. This was one of my favorite pieces to suggest for the bridesmaids’ processional.

To end Banks of Sullane without going into Paiste Fionn, use an arpeggiated D chord (like in measure 34-35, above).

Simple Gifts
A cheerful arrangement with an Americana feel, a glittering harp interlude, and a key change into a simpler verse. Lever harp can manage the key change, by simplifying the left hand to make C naturals. See example below.

Lever harp can omit LH for four measures to make C naturals.
